Working in the kitchen of the Asian restaurant ‘The Golden Dragon’ is a Chinese man with a toothache. His workmates tear out his tooth with the aid of a pipe tong; it lands in the Thai soup. A girl has become pregnant and quarrels with her boyfriend. Inga finds the tooth in her Thai soup. A young Chinese girl is forced into prostitution. The Chinese man bleeds to death in the kitchen of the ‘Golden Dragon’. His workmates throw his body in the river. Inga also throws the tooth into the river. These disparate snapshots are brought together within The Golden Dragon, which gives its name both to the play by Roland Schimmelpfennig and the opera by Peter Eötvös. In creating the opera, Schimmelpfennig’s plot was reduced to 22 short scenes, cut and cross-faded in fast sequence.
